How to Improve Shot Accuracy in Rocket League

Most missed shots are not missed because of weak power — they are missed because of bad placement, a poor setup touch, or taking a shot that was never on. Improving your finishing is mostly about decisions and setup, which means it is very learnable.

This guide covers where to aim, how to set up a clean strike, and how to pick shots worth taking.

Aim for the corners, use the whole net

A ball hit straight at the goalie is a save waiting to happen. Aim for the parts of the net that are hardest to defend.

  • Target the corners and the areas away from where a keeper sits.
  • Use the full width of the goal — a shot rolling into the far post beats a powerful shot up the middle.
  • Placement beats power almost every time at every rank.

Set up your touch before you shoot

Great finishers rarely shoot off a bad bounce. They take a setup touch that puts the ball where they can strike it cleanly.

  • Use a soft first touch to push the ball into space in front of you, then strike the second touch.
  • Hitting through the center of the ball gives power and accuracy; catching it off-center sprays the shot.
  • Line your car up with the direction you want the ball to go, then follow through toward the net.

Shoot on the ground before you shoot in the air

Ground shots and low-air shots convert far more reliably than ambitious aerial strikes. Build your finishing from the ground up:

  • Get comfortable with powerslide setups that let you turn and shoot across the goal.
  • Practice redirects — sending a moving ball toward the net with a single, well-aimed touch.
  • Add aerial finishing only once your ground shooting is dependable.

Pick shots that are actually on

Part of accuracy is shot selection. A low-percentage shot from a bad angle usually just hands possession back. If the angle or power is not there, take the touch that keeps possession and reset for a better chance instead. Kept pressure often produces an easier goal a moment later.

See which chances you are missing

It is hard to know whether you are missing shots, not creating them, or taking bad ones in the first place. Replay review separates those.

Upload a replay to GetBetter and it grades your shooting specifically — including your shot conversion and the quality of the chances you took — with a score you can track over time. Because it coaches you, the player, you get a clear read on whether to work on finishing, setup or shot selection, instead of guessing.

How to score more goals

  1. 1
    Aim away from the keeper

Target the corners and the open side of the net instead of shooting up the middle.

  2. 2
    Take a setup touch

Push the ball into space with a soft first touch, then strike the second touch cleanly.

  3. 3
    Hit through the center

Make contact through the middle of the ball and follow through toward the net for power and accuracy.

  4. 4
    Master ground shots first

Build reliable powerslide shots and redirects before attempting aerial finishes.

  5. 5
    Choose better shots

When the angle or power is not there, keep possession and reset for a higher-percentage chance.

  6. 6
    Measure your finishing

Use GetBetter to track your shot conversion and see whether to work on finishing, setup or selection.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I miss so many open shots?

Usually because of a rushed setup or off-center contact, not weak power. Taking a setup touch and striking through the center of the ball fixes most open misses.

Should I shoot with power or placement?

Placement, in almost every case. A well-placed shot into a corner beats a powerful shot up the middle that the keeper can save. Add power once your accuracy is reliable.

How do I practice shooting?

Custom training packs for shooting and redirects are ideal, plus Free Play for setup touches. Start on the ground and only add aerial finishing once your ground shots are consistent.

How do I know if shooting is really my weakness?

Review your replays with GetBetter. It scores your shot conversion and chance quality, so you can tell whether the problem is finishing, setup, or the shots you are choosing to take.
